Not Your Typical Business School
Walsh College is a US-based institution that has established itself as a private, not-for-profit business and technology college. Situated in Troy, Michigan, its origins go back to 1922, when Mervyn Walsh, a former accountant to Thomas Edison, opened the Walsh Institute in Detroit with 23 students. That school later became a college, and received state authority to grant degrees in 1970. In 2022, it completed 100 years as an institution. Walsh College portrays itself as not a business school, but an institution that blends theory with practice to prepare students for careers.
Discussing the programs, Walsh has two schools — the School of Business and the School of Technology. At the bachelor’s level, learners can choose from a Bachelor of Accountancy, a BS in Applied Management, and BBA options such as Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Business Analytics, and International Business. In the technology segment, the BSIT pathways include Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, FinTech, Programming, and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Similarly, the master’s list covers an MBA plus MS degrees in domains like Accountancy, Finance, Management, Marketing, Taxation, Data Science, Information Technology, and AI and Machine Learning. Beyond these, Walsh offers doctoral degrees, including DBAs and PhDs in Organizational Leadership and Technology, along with short certificates in areas like AI Strategy, Cybersecurity, and Human Resources Management.
Meanwhile, the way these programs are delivered varies quite a bit. According to the college’s Fall 2025 attendance model, many programs are largely online and self-paced, such as the MBA, where 83% of students take only online courses. Other programs, including the DBA and several IT degrees, include a virtual hybrid classroom component with an in-person part. Because of this mix, students can pick a format that suits their schedule. Class sizes also stay small, with an average of about 11 students in FY 2025 and roughly 17 students per faculty member.
Apart from standard admission, Walsh provides a few special pathways. These include the Graduate Degree FastTrack, the Walsh Now program, transfer options, and support for international students and for veteran and military students. In fact, the college has worked with community colleges for over 50 years, which helps transfer students continue their studies. Walsh also lists partnerships with Great Lakes Executive Learning and Walsh College UAE.
On the accreditation front, Walsh College is backed by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Moreover, several of their business degree programs carry specialized stamps of approval from the ACBSP. The State of Michigan has given the college legal authority to operate as a private, not-for-profit institution and to grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees and certificates. It’s also worth noting that Walsh is a member of NC-SARA, meaning their online classes are fully authorized across state lines. On the accounting side, they designed both their Bachelor’s and Master’s programs to match Michigan’s CPA exam requirements. Just keep in mind that a degree isn’t an automatic ticket to a license. You’ll still need to meet the state board’s criteria yourself, as the college can’t guarantee final approval.
Overall, Walsh combines a long history, focused business and technology programs, and flexible delivery. Its Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and its HR Summit also add hands-on options beyond the classroom.
