Chuck E. Cheese is an American chain offering arcade, food, birthday party, and kids-only entertainment. The company was founded in 1977 by co-founder of Atari, Nolan Bushnell, and opened its first 5,000 sq ft. Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre in San Jose, California, on May 17, 1977. The initial idea included a sit-down pizza parlor, an indoor amusement park, and animated entertainment, paving the way for the modern family entertainment center.
Chuck E. Cheese now runs 500+ locations in the United States and abroad. It caters to kids, mostly from the ages of 2 to 12, and conducts about 500,000 birthday parties a year.
The locations have hundreds of arcade and redemption games, prizes, birthday packages, and physical attractions like trampolines and areas of Adventure World. In 2016, the company unveiled a new token-based system, the Play Pass and Play Bands, that will replace the regular tokens. In 2018, the company announced All You Can Play as a new system to offer to guests, and in 2020 the company unveiled a new system for storing gameplay and the E-Tickets.
Since 2023, Chuck E. Cheese has also spent over $300 million renovating games, attractions, food, prizes, and party experiences at the fun centers. It’s fun! Pass members can also enjoy unlimited standard arcade play for a monthly fee, and individual venues have one-time game options. Sensory Sensitive Sundays are offered at select sites and feature less lighting, music, and the company’s Kid Check® identification system for families.
