Making Wholesale Simple
Bestway Medhub was founded in 2015 as the short-line pharmaceutical wholesale arm of Bestway Group, based out of Stoke-on-Trent. Bestway is a family-owned conglomerate founded in 1976 by the Pervez, Choudrey, and Sheikh families, with an annualised turnover north of £4.5 billion. A year before Medhub launched, the group had already moved into UK healthcare by buying The Co-operative Group’s pharmacy business for £620 million, rebranding it as Well Pharmacy. Medhub grew out of that same expansion, giving the group its own wholesale supply arm.
Growth came quickly. By May 2017, year-to-date sales were up 107% on the year before, with an 88% rise in pharmacy accounts served. That year Medhub expanded into Northern Ireland, targeting the 250-plus independent pharmacies there, and by October was in talks to move into the Isle of Man and Channel Islands too. Director of Sales and Operations Faysal Uddin called it a chance to “shake up the market,” while commercial manager Paul Insley credited the growth to face-to-face relationships rather than marketing.
The pace held. By October 2018, in its third year, sales were up 49% year-on-year, and Medhub passed its 1,000th independent pharmacy account, taking total outlets served past 2,000 across the UK. A regional sales manager was hired specifically for Northern Ireland and Scotland, and Medhub became available through the PharmAssist price cascade.
Today, Medhub operates alongside sister wholesaler Lexon under Bestway Healthcare, together supporting more than 5,000 independent pharmacy contractors and processing over 100 million medication packs a year, making the group the UK’s fourth-largest pharmaceutical wholesaler. Medhub also works with Wardles, Bestway’s Dispensing Appliance Contractor, on surgical products and medical appliances. The offer has stayed consistent: net pricing with no hidden fees, dedicated account managers, and reliable delivery for independent pharmacies that might otherwise struggle against larger suppliers.
