Aveda was established in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher, a Minnesota-based hairstylist. Initially the company had products for hair and went on to develop products for skin, body, make-up, hair colour and aroma. The Estée Lauder Companies bought Aveda in 1997, and the brand is now a part of the Estée Lauder’s roster of prestige beauty brands.
The brand offers various hair care products like Be Curly Advanced for waves and curls, Aveda Botanical Repair for damaged hair, Invati Ultra Advanced for hair thinning, Rosemary Mint, Nutriplenish for dry hair and Shampure and Smooth Infusion. Each product is crafted for specific needs and represents a significant portion of Aveda’s product range. It also offers skin and body products such as Tulasāra, Botanical Kinetics, Outer Peace, Stress-Fix, Hand Relief and Beautifying.
The company operates in salons, spas and retailers and has a good online presence. It assists professional hair services like cuts, styling and hair colour. Today, there are over 8,000 Aveda salons and spas located globally. The brand has been professionally educating with Aveda Institutes since its inaugural institute opened in Minneapolis in 1982.
Aveda is very particular about the active ingredients in its products. The company claims that its products are now 100% vegan and cruelty-free since their inception in 2021. In 2023, Aveda launched its charitable initiatives to raise over $71 million for water-related projects and became a certified B Corp.
