Vedic Hindu University (VHU) is a 100% online institution built around one idea, that ancient Vedic knowledge deserves a proper academic home in the modern world. Located in Oro Valley, Arizona, United States, VHU is not a mainstream university offering studies in religion as a side course. The whole institute is established around Hindu studies, Vedic philosophy, and Sanatana Dharma. All the programs at VHU are taught by experienced scholars and teachers who treat this as their main subject.

The term “Ved” itself means knowledge, and it has come from the Sanskrit root “vid”, which means to know. VHU builds its identity around this, positioning itself as a place where the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and other sacred texts are studied seriously, not just used for reference purposes. The motto of VHU is to “rediscover the Village in the Global Village,” rooted in three Vedic ideals — sarve bhavantu sukhinah (may all be happy), vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the world is one family), and vishwam grame prathishthitam (the world established as a village). Simply, VHU wants education to bring people together instead of dividing them on the basis of faith, religion, caste, race, or background, while staying true to its Hindu foundation.

VHU runs its programs completely online, so location isn’t a barrier. VHU believes financial constraints should never stand in the way of academic growth. Hence, the affordable fee structure is intentionally designed to make specialized higher learning in Hindu studies attainable for everyone. The faculty draws teachers mainly from India and the US, people with real depth in the Vedas, Sanskrit, epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and Hindu philosophy generally.

As far as the degree programs are concerned, VHU currently offers four:

Bachelor of Arts in Hindu Studies, a 3-year undergraduate program open to students from any academic background, Humanities, Science, Commerce, doesn’t matter. It mainly covers topics on Hindu civilization, scriptures, philosophy, and even touches on Sanskrit language basics, plus meditation and yoga as part of the curriculum.

Master of Arts in Hindu Studies, the postgraduate route for those who want to go deeper into Hindu philosophy and textual study after their bachelor’s. This degree connect classical Vedic thought with the present global context.

PhD in Hindu Studies is a research-driven doctoral program for those wanting to contribute original work to the field. This is designed around independent research and dissertation work under faculty guidance.

Another program is the PhD in Theological Studies, which is a slightly broader doctoral track that looks at theology and religious traditions across cultures and history, not limited to Hinduism alone, though still grounded in the same scholarly approach.

If you are drawn to the academic study of Hinduism, whether for personal growth, teaching, research, or interfaith dialogue, VHU is built specifically for you. You don’t need to relocate, pause your career, or put your life on hold. VHU programs offer the ultimate flexibility, allowing you to master ancient wisdom entirely on your own schedule, from anywhere in the world.
