Archbold’s story starts in 1919, when 16-year-old John Frederick Archbold came back from the Boer War with a vision and two army-auctioned Sentinel steam trucks and built a haulage business out of them. That same willingness to push past constraints showed up again in 1932, when Don Archbold took on major contracts by subcontracting out capacity he didn’t yet have, a founding instinct the company still points back to today.

The business kept adapting through genuinely difficult decades. After haulage was nationalized in 1947, Archbold pivoted into running clearing houses across the UK and focused on exports moving out of Leeds through major ports. By the late 1950s, the company was already pioneering container services between Leeds and Paris, ahead of standard ISO containers becoming the norm. The 1960s brought the “Big A” livery that made Archbold’s trucks a familiar sight on UK roads, and in 1972 a purpose-built headquarters in Morley, Leeds, backed up that growing footprint.

More milestones followed: a Just-In-Time logistics contract with Ford in the early 1980s lifted turnover by 50% and modernized operations, and in 1993 the company diversified into automotive retail and repair with Archbold Carshop Ltd, a business that still runs today. During the 2008 credit crunch, rather than retreating, Archbold acquired Direct Parcels Ltd in Nuneaton, strengthening its Midlands warehousing and distribution presence.

In 2019, Archbold marked its 100th year in business, having come through two world wars, the Great Depression, nationalization, industrial unrest, and the 2008 crisis along the way. The company remains family-owned, now led by Alan Maher, and operates out of a head office in Heywood with a fourth-generation family business still running at its core. Today, Archbold reports 99.2% on-time-in-full delivery, coverage across 150 countries, 24/7/365 operations, and recent record turnover and profits, offering express services, UK and global logistics, pallet distribution, and warehousing from its Manchester fulfillment site.
