École Supérieure de Management et de Communication (ESM)

Opportunity. For everyone.

École Supérieure de Management et de Communication, or ESM, is a private business school based in Geneva, Switzerland. It was established in 1986, and it marks its 40th anniversary milestone by highlighting that it has been “challenging traditional approaches to business education” in the city. Right from the start, the school built its identity around a practical, hands-on approach combined with theories and concepts, aiming to prepare students and professionals to become confident, entrepreneurial-minded leaders. It believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to grow, and that there isn’t just one path to get there.

Moving to what’s on offer, ESM teaches across several levels. At the bachelor’s stage, students can choose between a Bachelor of Arts in International Management, one in Corporate Communication, or a special Sport-Elite Bachelor’s track designed for elite athletes balancing sport with academic study. At the master’s level, the school runs a Master of Science in Innovation & Management. Beyond this, ESM also runs a Doctorate in Business Administration. On the continuing education side, the school offers a French-language Executive MBA, along with a federal AI Business Specialist certificate and shorter certificate programs (CAS) covering areas such as project and event management, AI and leadership, cyber risk management, and trading.

As for delivery, ESM emphasizes applied learning through real-world problems. Since 2003, it has run Switzerland’s first alternating school-company degree program, pairing classroom study with time spent working. Its Bachelor’s students also take part in what the school calls “Participatory Learning Weeks,” held four times a year, where they work in groups on projects proposed by real companies, guided by an industry speaker. Alongside this, the school runs a travelling, company-based training format for its event management diploma, in partnership with organizations from the events industry.

When it comes to accreditation, ESM holds a specialized accreditation for its BBA, MBA, and DBA programs from the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE), based in Overland Park, Kansas, USA. IACBE itself is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Along with this, ESM holds the eduQua certification, the Swiss quality label built for continuing education providers, and it is ISO 9001:2015 certified through the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS), itself part of the global IQNet certification network. As a legacy achievement, its 1998 Executive MBA program holds historical significance as the first fully French-language MBA in Switzerland to carry American ACBSP accreditation, though the current site preserves this milestone as part of its rich institutional history instead of an active current certification.

ESM has also built partnerships beyond pure academics. It works with ICT-Formation Professionnelle Suisse, the national body that helps define federal ICT certifications in Switzerland, and it holds the PEP certification (Plate-forme des Entreprises Professionnalisantes), which is meant to reflect the practical, employability-focused value of its training. The school is also part of the Athletes Network, supporting elite athletes since 2009, and lists graduate employers including Rolex, Nespresso, Pictet, and the World Bank among others.
