Golden Gate University (GGU) is a nonprofit university that is situated in San Francisco, California, US. It focuses on education for working professionals mostly. The story of GGU goes back to the early 1850s, when the San Francisco YMCA started evening lectures during the Gold Rush. In 1901, the school offered its first degree program, and it began as California’s first evening law school. Since then, the university has kept the same idea of learning that is practical and career-focused. According to Golden Gate University, more than 68,000 alumni have studied there.
GGU offers 60+ online and hybrid degrees and certificates, and a few programs are also available on campus. The programs are grouped under its schools of business, accounting, psychology, taxation, and law, along with technology. Learners can pick from associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate levels, as well as certificates. Popular master’s options include an MBA, an Executive MBA, Business Analytics, Finance, Marketing, HRM, Artificial Intelligence, Taxation, and Public Administration. With respect to doctorate programs, GGU lists a Doctor of Business Administration, a PsyD in Applied Counseling Psychology, and a Doctor of Technology in Applied and Agentic AI.
As for the campuses, GGU has two locations in San Francisco. The Downtown Campus is located in the city’s Academic Village at UC Law San Francisco, close to City Hall. The facilities include classrooms, study spaces, dining, fitness facilities, and student housing. On the other hand, the Lake Merced Campus is in southwest San Francisco, near Lake Merced and Ocean Beach, on 144 acres of greenery. It has a library, dining options, housing, outdoor spaces, and the Mashouf Wellness Center. In this way, students can choose a city setting or a more traditional campus feel.
Beyond San Francisco, GGU Worldwide extends its programs to students in other countries. Some of these programs are taught in Chinese, Mongolian, Vietnamese, and Spanish, in addition to English, so learners can study in a language they are comfortable with. The university works with partners such as upGrad, Beacon in China, the Center for Global Best Practices in the Philippines, and Loyola Institute of Business Administration in India. It also lists agreements with universities in countries including the Philippines, Thailand, Finland, Canada, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the UK. In addition, GGU is an associate member of the Association of Indian Universities.
When it comes to accreditation, GGU is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), which also accredits Stanford, UC Berkeley, and the University of San Francisco. The commission is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and GGU says it has held this accreditation since 1959. Its accreditation was reaffirmed in June 2025 through Spring 2031. Finally, the immensely experienced faculty at GGU ensures that the education they impart is practical and directly applicable to corporate environments.
GGU also builds its approach around flexibility. Classes run on days, nights, weekends, and in online and blended formats, so working professionals can fit learning around work commitments. The university believes education should be open to many people, and it supports students through career services, veteran services, and accounting and taxation internships.
